Daar is 'n rosé -styl wat by elke smaak of sakboek pas.

Renegade Wine Co. Rosé Columbia Valley Washington 2014 ($12)

Left Coast Cellars Rosé Willamette Valley Oregon 2014 ($16)

(Blaai af vir 'n paar somerresepte wat goed pas by rosé!)

Dutton Kyndall ’s Reserve Chardonnay 2017 – $ 42

Sosie Wines Vivio Vineyard Rousanne 2016 – $ 38

1849 Wine Company Au Jus Chardonnay 2017

Castello Pomino Nenefizio Riserva Pomino Bianco 2018 – $ 47

Winemaker Graham Weerts is a fervent believer that lees incorporation is a key component to creating Chardonnay with integrity and with the ability to age.

Winemaker’s Notes: The 2017 vintage was affected by heat and drought, but the early harvesting of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier grapes before mid-August and Vermentino grapes before the end of the month, has allowed us to preserve the acidity and aromatic components of the white grapes, resulting in wines of great freshness and depth. Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia 2017 has a bright straw yellow color, the nose carries outstanding citrus notes accompanied by hints of white flowers and boxwood. The 14 best rosés to try this summer, according to wine experts

With Memorial Day in the rearview mirror, we are officially in the fast lane to summer.

And what does summer signal? Rosé on rooftops, of course.

While this summer you may be sipping your rosé on your own rooftop with a mask firmly at your side, choosing the right rosé can certainly elevate any self-isolation experience, transforming your personal space into a Provencal paradise.

"For folks that may be new to rosé, I would encourage them to try a few different hues," said Andy Myers, wine director at Jose Andres Think Food Group. "Try a pale Provencal one, a blushing Spanish, and a rich, dark US version. See what you like."

He adds that rosés should ideally be dry — anywhere from 12.5% ABV or higher is a dry rosé — and loaded with fresh, vibrant fruits like strawberries and raspberries.

A note from our experts: While we tend to think of warm weather as "rosé season," our experts unanimously agree that there is no such thing, and a great rosé can be enjoyed any time of year. The taste of a good rosé can give us something to look forward to and transport us to a beautiful afternoon at any time of year — which may be just the dose of optimism we need right about now.

"The biggest misconception about rosé is that it's only for warm-weather enjoyment. The truth is that rosé is fantastic year round," said Brian Freedman, a wine, spirits, food, and travel writer. He consults on restaurants, is a drinks educator, event host, speaker, and regular wine contributor for Food & Wine Magazine.

"In fact, I love opening a bottle on a snowy evening in the dead of winter. It's my own little protest against the cold and the dark, and a wonderful reminder that better days are sure to come," Freedman added. Well said!

Anyway, shall we get on with it? Whether you're spread out on a picnic blanket in your own backyard or staring longingly out of your apartment window in the city, these are 14 of the best rosés to try this summer, according to our experts.

We Tried 10 Canned Rosés and These are the Ones to Sip This Summer

It’s always a great day in the office when you pop open a bunch of canned rosés and call it research. We sipped our way through the most portable iterations of summer’s most popular drink to determine which brand is your best bet for toting along to your sunny outdoor adventures. The selection of rosés varied in alcohol content, color, dryness, sweetness, crispness, bubbliness, size and price, making the task slightly more difficult than anticipated. However, we persisted through the trials of tasting 10 types of wine before noon, and two obvious winning labels arose.

Overall, the bubbly rosé fared better in the taste test due to the simple fact that most of us are accustomed to fizziness when popping open a canned beverage, and these fulfilled that ingrained expectation. Drinking still wine from a can seemed like a good idea, but we generally found ourselves wanting to pour it into a glass—or a plastic cup, at least.

Wildcard Winner

This limited edition bubbly rosé was a rare gem. It was light, delicately sweet, and had a smooth balance of floral and fruity notes. Plus, the crisp bubbles make it a refreshing drink to sip on any given (hot-as-hell) day. It was a clear crowd favorite among the entire bunch. These bubbly cans are available for a limited time only, so secure yours while you still kan. A portion of the sales from this wine will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign that advocates for LGBTQ community.

Overall Best in Show

Union Wine Co. Underwood (375ml $6.69 per can ABV 11%)

The Oregon based Underwood Wines, produced under the Union Wine Company umbrella, offers both a still and bubbly canned rosé𠅊nd we’re calling out both for excellence. Underwood was among the first canned wine brands to show up on the scene, and is often the case, remains among the best thus, it’s readily stocked in many grocery stores nationwide.

Underwood took the crown under the still rosé category for it’s dry and nuanced, subtly sweet flavor. Pleasant floral notes, along with a hint of pear, make this easy-drinking wine feel dainty and refreshing. It is incredibly smooth and tastes sophisticated, even drinking it straight from the can. Underwood’s bubbly rosé is slightly sweeter than the still, and gives you that familiar effervescence one craves with the pop of a can. This is definitely a worthwhile go-to for all summer sipping occasions.

1st Runner Up

This sweet and delicate sparkling rosé was the next best bubbly in the lineup. The flavor profile included vanilla and stone fruit notes with a slightly minerally undertone. The bubbles were delightfully tiny, which almost every taster called out as a quality they enjoyed. The small serving size makes the Bollicini cans easy to pile into a cooler for a day outside enjoying the sun.

2nd Runner Up

The Dark Horse brand landed in the middle of the road for us. It was not too dry, nor was it too juicy-sweet. If you are looking for an everyday type of rosé, this brand delivers one. It’s not overly fussy and has a decent balance of minerally, floral, and acidic notes. It’s the perfect after-work wind-down wine to grab when you don’t want to open an entire bottle.

Sipping on a Budget

If you are looking to ball on a budget, then this branded Trader Joe’s canned rosé is for you. It’s not the best out there, but for $1 a can, you can’t beat the price anywhere. However, keep in mind, you get what you pay for. This rosé is has a slight bitter funk to it however, there are some citrus notes that offset that funk, and in general, it’s a palatable poolside beverage. Just be cautious how many you’re throwing back.

Wat is dit? A fresh spin on the classic sour, elevated with fresh juice and the addition of peaches for extra depth. Mostly phoned in by bartenders, the whiskey sour is one of those drinks that doesn’t get the respect it deserves. But when it’s made well, it’s a tasty summery beverage.

Try it with: Bulleit 10 Year. The bourbon brings a nice body to this crisp summer cocktail.

A dozen Rosés for delicious summer sipping

The time has finally come in the United States where wine store shelves are overflowing with Rosé. Something you had to seek out just a handful of years ago stares you in the face no matter where you shop. Choice is, of course, a good thing, but it’s also hard to know what to choose. Here’s a look at a dozen current vintage Rosés culled from more than five dozen that I tasted recently. And as a bonus, I’ve included a quick look at a fun book about Rosé that you’ll have a hard time putting down.

Wild strawberry and cherry lead the nose and reverberate on the palate along with bits of vanilla bean and subtle spice notes. Sour red cherry emerges on the lengthy finish. One vintage after another, they produce a delicious Rosé, and 2017 is no exception.

Recanati 2017 Rosé ($17)

Hailing from Galilee Israel, this Rosé is a blend of Barbera (80%) and Merlot (20%). It’s darker in color than most Rosé. This is entirely Pinot Noir from the Dundee Hills AVA of Willamette Valley. Rose petal and red cherry aromas lead the charge. The palate is loaded with sour red fruit underpinned by bursts of citrus and gentle wisps of spice. The finish is long, layered and crisp with cranberry and pomegranate notes.

Stewart Cellars 2017 Sonoma Mountain Rosé ($28)

This Rosé from Sonoma County is a blend of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Peach and watermelon aromas are part of the boisterous nose. The palate is loaded with melon, citrus and red berry flavors. Hints of ripe apricot are joined by bits of crème fraiche on the long, crispy finish.

If you want to learn a lot more about Rosé, you’d be hard pressed to do better than this fantastic book from sommelier Victoria James. It covers everything from production techniques, regional differences, cocktail and food recipes, pairing suggestions and quotes about Rosé from chefs, sommeliers and the like. It’s a good-looking book that’s loaded with fun illustrations, and most importantly, it’s an entertaining read. Bring it out back with a bottle and have twice the fun.

Refreshing rosés that pair well with summer eats

As we enjoy the holiday weekend and the lion’s share of summer, rosés will be my go-to wines on many nights. For me, they’ve become the quintessential wines of summer, at once light and refreshing but also substantial. Some of them are highly versatile and capable of pairing with a wide range of foods, from fish and chicken to simply prepared meats, especially pork and lamb.

That versatility was on display at a quick late dinner with friends the other night at Boulud Sud, Daniel Boulud’s relaxed and elegant Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in New York. It was a crisp yet fruity rosé from the south of France, Chateau Riotor’s 2012 Côtes de Provence, which went beautiful with an assortment of small plates we shared.

They included two flatbreads, one with caramelized onion, anchovies and Nicoise olives, the other with ground lamb, eggplant and pine nuts crispy artichokes with aioli and even a pasta dish with un-smoked Italian bacon, tomato and basil. The rosé, which sells at retail for about $15, held up to all of it. The wine is a blend of some of the region’s typical red varieties (cinsault, grenache and syrah) with a little white vermentino.

Another wine that stood out in my tastings is Domaine Begude’s 2012 Pinot Rosé, also from the south of France. This one is from Limoux in the Languedoc region and is made from pinot noir grown using organic methods. It’s an absolutely lovely wine, delicate and delicious when sipped on its own with notes of strawberry and subtle orange, a little spice and vibrant acidity. A real value at about $12, it’s among the best rosés I’ve found this season and would be wonderful with salmon. (Imported by Wine Selections, Wellesley Hills, Mass.)
